Frequently Asked Questions

For therapy, I recommend one session per week.

I'm not in-network with insurance. For private-pay clients, I will provide you with a monthly Super Bill which will have everything you need to request reimbursement for an out-of-network provider. See below for helpful tips about navigating this with your insurance provider.

Often you can use your Health Savings Account (HSA) or Flexible Spending Account (FSA) benefits to pay for therapy. If they give you a pre-paid Visa or Mastercard, you’ll use it just like you would your own credit card.

Please check with your HSA to confirm you can use your benefits for outpatient mental health services and to clarify how to pay or get reimbursed. If they ask you to pay out of pocket and submit a claim for reimbursement, I’m happy to provide invoices as needed.

I believe in removing barriers to therapy for folks who are most impacted by systemically unhealthy work environments and so I reserve a few spots in my practice at a sliding scale rate. Contact me for more information.

Insurance Tips

Insurance companies often reimburse for a percentage of what they say therapy should cost. They might call this the “Usual, Customary, and Reasonable (UCR)” rate or the “Reasonable Market Value.” You can use the Fair Health Consumer site to calculate the rate for therapy in my area.

  1. Choose “Going out-of-network.”
  2. Input the zip code for my place of business: 94602.
  3. Use the code for individual outpatient therapy: 90837.
  4. Towards the top right, in blue, you’ll see the “Out-of-Network Uninsured Price” of $274, which happens to be more than my current fee!
  5. When you call your insurance provider and they give you a UCR lower than that, you can say that you used the Fair Health Consumer site to calculate the going rate for a therapist in my provider area and ask if they would consider reimbursing at that rate. No promises, but it never hurts to ask. Best of luck.
